The New Hampshire legislature approved emergency financial aid for people struggling to pay rapidly rising energy bills earlier this month. Electricity bills have gone up by 50 percent in the state, driven in part by the increased cost of natural gas following the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

In June, Governor Chris Sununu proposed using $60 million of the state’s surplus to give all electricity ratepayers a $100 credit. The legislature chose to use $35 million of the surplus instead, but directed it to people earning 60 to 75 percent of the median income in New Hampshire. People who apply and qualify will get a $200 credit on their electricity bill and an additional $450 for heating assistance. People earning less than 60 percent of the median income can already make use of other financial assistance.
